Ohio Statue Project Action Center

Ohio is on the brink of choosing a new statue for National Statuary Hall, and we want to make sure they choose a woman! Three outstanding women made the list of finalists: abolitionist Harriet Beecher Stowe, suffragist Harriet Taylor Upton, and astronaut Judith Resnik.

Now it’s time to take our campaign to the public. Ohioans will be given a chance to vote for their pick of the finalists from March 20 to June 12, 2010. The public vote isn’t binding, but the Statuary Committee is expected to give it great weight in making their final decision.

We need everyone to help get the word out! Here’s how:

  • Letters to the Editor

The best way to reach Ohioans is with a good old-fashioned letter to the editor. It’s easy and quick to send one by email or online submission form. We’ve compiled the contact information for several Ohio newspapers along with some sample letters to inspire you.

  • Letters to the Statuary Committee

The six members of the Statuary Committee are the people who will make the final decision. They and their staff have gone to great lengths to make the statue selection process open and inclusive. They’ve also made it clear that they welcome thoughtful input not just from Ohioans, but from interested historical societies and women’s groups as well. A polite letter to the Committee members is an excellent way to express your support for one of the candidates.

  • Spread the Word

We’ve created a one-page flyer for distributing in Ohio, explaining briefly the voting process and urging citizens to Put a Woman in Statuary Hall! Send it to everyone you know — friends, family, teachers — and as well as to women’s clubs, Girl Scout troops, school groups, etc. It’s in pdf format, suitable for printing out or sending as an email attachment:

Click to open the file, and then either print it out, or, if you plan to send it as an email attachment, save it to some handy location on your own computer.
